Gaining experience in radiometric and stable isotope measurements |
| Project summary: |
One of the most pressing concerns for humans on Earth today is the climate change. By exploring past climate changes, their magnitude and rapidity, we obtain a basis for understanding how future climate changes may influence our environment. Cave sediments can archive very good records of climate changes. The Geochemical Laboratories of Geological Survey of Israel is an analytic array of the first order for gaining the skills and experience in using the methods of isotopic measurements of cave sediments. Visiting the Survey will enable me to get acquainted with fundamental principles and practical applications of stable isotope methods in palaeoclimatology and environmental science. Within the project I will be able to use different types of equipment and measurement devices to perform analyses which are crucial for my doctoral research. Learning and applying these methods will upgrade and expand the scientific knowledge about the caves and the climate conditions and changes in the Republic of Croatia. Results will serve to Croatian and worldwide researchers in the fields of geology, geomorphology and climatology, for the comparison of the data gathered from other parts of the Europe. |

Jedno od najvažnijih i najaktualnijih pitanja današnjice su klimatske promjene na Zemlji. Istražujući prošlost klimatskih promjena, njihov opseg i brzinu, dobiva se osnova za razumijevanje posljedica dosadašnjih i budućih utjecaja klimatskih promjena na okoliš. Sedimenti iz speleoloških objekata (spilja) sadrže brojne kvalitetne zapise o klimatskim promjenama. Geokemijski laboratoriji Geološkog Instituta Izraela su tehnološki suvremeno opremljeno okruženje za stjecanje vještina i iskustva u korištenju metoda izotopnih mjerenja u spiljskim sedimentima. Posjetom Institutu bilo bi mi omogućeno upoznavanje s temeljnim načelima i praktičnom primjenom izotopnih metoda u svrhu paleoklimatskih istraživanja i istraživanja promjena okoliša. U okviru projekta bit ću u mogućnosti koristiti različite vrste opreme za izvođenje analiza koje su ključne za istraživanja i rezultate moje doktorske disertacije. Učenje i primjena tih metoda te njima dobiveni rezultati, zasigurno će nadograditi i proširiti znanstvene spoznaje o postanku i evoluciji spilja, uključujući klimatske uvjete u kojima su se oblikovale te klimatskim promjenama na prostoru Hrvatske. Rezultati će služiti hrvatskim i svjetskim znanstvenicima s područja geologije, geomorfologije i klimatologije, te će biti usporedivi sa sličnim rezultatima dobivenim iz drugih dijelova Europe. |
